“Work 90 hours Or 60 hours a Week”
Hello Readers,
Today, competition in the industry has increased a lot and everyone is working hard to keep themselves ahead in this fast-paced competition. There is a topic that is being discussed a lot in the industry these days, and you must have understood it from my blog post. Our company holds group
discussions on different topics once or twice a month. Last week, there was a group discussion on this very topic in our company, and I got the idea to write a new blog based on some of the points from that discussion.
Everyone knows where the idea of every employee working at least 60 or more hours started, and now the issue is grabbing the headlines of every newspaper and everyone is discussing it. After Infosys co-founder and former CEO, Narayana Murthy said that youth should work at least 70 hours a week to boost the country’s work productivity, it caused a debate globally. While many people criticized him, several also came in support.
Talking about his remark, Murthy told,
"I rationalized it this way. If anybody has performed much better than me
in their own field, not necessarily in my field, I would respect,
I would call them, and I would say, where do you think I was wrong in
saying this? But I didn't find it. A lot of my Western friends,
a lot of NRIs, and a lot of good people in India called me,
and without exception, they were all very happy.
They all said whether it is 70 or 60, that's not the issue."
He further emphasised the issue and said, "The issue is that we have to
work hard in this country because the poor farmer works very hard.
You know, the poor factory worker works very hard.
So, therefore, those of us who received education at a huge discount,
thanks to the subsidy from the government for all this education.
In my case, I got a scholarship, right from the university.
So we owe it to the less fortunate citizens of India to work extremely hard.
After that too many peoples are coming out and shared their thoughts on the same. I am sharing some thoughts here to understand better.
Many people are citing examples from developed countries like the United States and China or any other country to support the thought that working hours should be increased to 60 or even 90 hours per week.
Is it possible to work 60 or 90 hours a week
Many people work very hard at their jobs. Sometimes it is a requirement of that profession, such as doctors, politicians, people serving the country, some businessmen, goverment officers etc. Sometimes 60 or 90 work is possible, but if done regularly, it will definitely come out from somewhere and it will have both good and bad consequences.
Let me give you an example, there is a veterinary school near where I live. A friend of mine’s father works as a veterinary technician at that school and I really like his dedication to his work and his punctuality at work shows how much he loves his job. Sometimes, due to the requirements of his profession, he works several days a week. But his alot dedication to his work has paid off for him in many ways. I can tell by looking at him that it is never worth it to overwork yourself. He worked 60+ hours a week as a veterinary technician. There were no weekends. No days off. No lunch breaks or lunch breaks that went way beyond the actual time, no breaks. No meals on time. He worked 12–14 hours a day on his feet. He worked in the dark. Sometimes he would come home in the dark and be back at work before the sun came up. His statement is that he never saw the sun during his record time duration. He says his record was 29 days, and that too without a single day off.
One day while being examined during surgery, his chest tightened and he felt a sharp pain in his left arm. I picked up the phone and went to the front desk and told their receptionist to call the emergency number that I was having a heart attack.
The ambulance arrived and they put me on a stretcher and then he was transferred from the animal hospital to the human hospital. He was admitted to the intensive care unit[ICU] and when his wife arrived, his heart tests were already starting. Even then, his mobile phone was continusly kept ringing. Two minutes later, his wife was furious when she saw a message from the veterinary hospital manager asking when I would be released from the intensive care unit and when he would be back at work. His wife shocked it. She called at job and screamed at them. Told them “This is your fault! You almost killed my husband! He’s never coming back to work for you assholes ever again!”
In short, thanks to the doctor’s hard work and God’s will, he recovered. But the stress and workload of work had taken a toll on him. After leaving the hospital, as he was walking slowly and carefully, he saw the sun and felt very bad about the situation. The world around him seemed different, and he realized how terrible his work situation was. He changed his job because he realized that he was not enjoying the hard work he was doing.
Work is important in life, but it is also important to balance it. unless it will back fired you.

What are you doing sitting at home? How much time do you spend in the garden with your wife and child? come to the office and start work? I also work on weekends, so you can work on weekends too. This was said by the chairman of LNT Company. According to him, LNT employees should work more than 90 hours. According to the prevailing law, any employee should work 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week and they should get one day off a week.
Many people are citing examples from developed countries like the United States and China, Japan or any other country to support the thought that working hours should be increased to 60 or even 90 hours per week.
China is a communist country where workers are forced to work most of the time by the government. Chinese workers work 46.1 hours per week, which is a record on paper. The lack of attention to worker safety and welfare is a major cause of accidents there. China’s economy is heavily dependent on exports, and if continuous exports stop, they feel their economy will be in danger, so they don’t want to take that risk.
Other factors also need to be consider
In today’s world, people want four days off a week and it is implemented by some cities in the world, while bank executives want two days off a week because they can’t handle their workload. Due to today’s hectic work schedule and inflation, many couples do not want to have children. Many people are sending their parents to old age homes. Today’s generation is facing various health problems.
Balance is very important in any work. If we cannot balance it, it will definitely collapse. While working and getting your life on the right track, we should make sure that we are not creating different problems because there are no benefits where we have sweets in our pockets but cannot eat them due to diabetes.
Final Thoughts
If you’re working on the shop floor in the middle of deafening noise and in unpleasant circumstances, there is a different work week, if you are reading interesting book, papers and you love doing research you can spend all the time you have doing that which is sort our job. It’s very hard to prescribe or fix work week. Our life is a period and what we do during that period will have consequences for us and our future generations. In today’s competitive era, we desperately need quality work, whether we do it in 8 hours or 10 hours, it doesn’t matter much. In today’s era of AI, a new generation is evolving and in this era, quality reading, writing, food, relationships, emotions are at a dangerous turning point and if that turning point is not handled properly, many accidents will happen.
However, there are some people who swear by working 80+ hours a week, which is just double the normal 40-hour work week schedule!
Still, working 80 hours a week is not something that employees can easily do throughout their lives; it requires a lot of dedication, passion, discipline, and a high work ethic.
We also have some quotes that support the 80-hour work week and that people have achieved tremendous success in their careers. However, there are also many disadvantages to working double the normal work hours.
So, the answer to how to meet the 80-hour work week and whether this work culture is worth following or not is very difficult because we cannot make humans robots in the age of AI.
Today I am sharing the daily routine of a famous businessman who has achieved a top position in the industry, which he shared on his Twitter handle.
Please share your feedback on this so that some new thoughts can emerge.
Hit the claps is a good idea to start positive thinking!!!!
Thank you.
