Work From Home or Work From Office
Hello Readers,
Last week, I was interviewing some candidates with my colleagues for our organization. A question in the list was whether the candidate is keen to work from office or home? In the interview, we got many answers to the questions related to the title of this blog, and we also got new questions.
Interesting!!! Human is alive!!!!!!!
The virus called Covid19 pandemic put this question into the interview process and everyone is tackle to the question as per their experience and as per their priority. I am sharing my thoughts on work priority but really looking forward to know your thoughts because your unique thought on this topic can definitely give a different twist to this topic.
Why heat is going on between WFH and WFO
Work from home[WFH] and work from office[WFO] are now part of the industry. Most IT employees want to work from the office as well as from home, but companies face issues such as low productivity in the team, reduced communication or some distance between teams while working from home, and teams taking longer to develop their skills or companies get better results while working from office so companies are are not very much interested to working from home for now.
Now, after hearing about the company’s stance on this policy we should also hear what the employees think about this policy. When I discussed this in the interview everyone give their opinion on the policy. Some candidates are comfortable working from anywhere and some candidates want full time work from home. Some candidates themselves ask about the company’s policy regarding WFH and WFO in the interview. According to the employees they feel that if the candidate works from home then the productivity does not decrease much and he is always fresh to work as he is working at his own place. He doesn’t have to travel through heavy traffic and he doesn’t have to worry about his lunch so if he is working from home he can invest the same money for his future.
When both positions are right or wrong, when the exact solution is not in front of us, a decision has to be made according to the situation.
I worked from home for over a year during the pandemic, some people missed their school and their collage during that time, and some people lost their jobs too.
The above statement makes it clear that work is important. The work means the outside era of our life where we go out to school, collage or work. In today’s life we cannot stay completely at home because as a humans we need to chat, discuss, share and take decisions and that is not possible at home.
Work from Home — New Era
Working from home brings more comfort, more flexibility for employee. Due to WFH, some companies got some profits in the pandemic while others suffered losses.
Above image shows the high cost of assets so some companies who are preferring WFH sell their assets and get higher profit and cut down on daily expenses. Some companies think long-term and decide on a hybrid model for their employees.
An attention economy brings time spent and valuation together. TikTok now commands more attention than Facebook and Instagram combined and, accordingly, tripled its revenue last year. The platform also capturing more attention is your home, specifically residential real estate, which — despite fears of a recession — has seen an unprecedented increase in home values and rents. Office space, meanwhile, is to residential what print was to online media in the aughts; its owners in denial as it hemorrhages share, jobs, and value.
Be wary of predictions that we’ll see an exodus from the cities to suburbs, however – the death of cities has been often and greatly exaggerated. Yes, Midtown at lunchtime feels muted … but lower Manhattan is more vibrant and pulsing than I’ve witnessed in my 20 years here. Some workers will move to more beautiful rural areas for balance. (I hate that word.) They may or may not find it. However, it’s more likely they will find career stasis.
An old-economy winner will be resort hotels. Business travel is a bull market right now, because event planners are suddenly strategic assets. Companies with a high share of remote workers need to get people in the same place some of the time, so they’re investing to make those moments an experience that sets an aspirational tone for the firm. They book the One Hotel in South Beach, fly in managers from around the globe, and charge the event planner with creating 2.5 days that will make people feel better about their employer the other 363 days. I know this, as my speaking business has thrived.
Advantages of WFH and WFO
- WFH: Employees have the flexibility to work from the comfort of their homes or any remote location.
- WFO: Employees work from a designated office location.
2. Commute:
- WFH: No commute time or costs, which can lead to increased productivity and reduced stress.
- WFO: Requires a daily commute, which can be time-consuming and expensive.
3. Flexibility:
- WFH: Offers greater flexibility in terms of work hours and balancing personal and professional life.
- WFO: Typically follows a fixed schedule with less flexibility.
4. Communication:
- WFH: Relies heavily on virtual communication tools, which can sometimes lead to miscommunication or feelings of isolation.
- WFO: Allows for in-person interactions, fostering better team communication and collaboration.
5. Productivity:
- WFH: Some employees report increased productivity due to reduced distractions and a comfortable work environment.
- WFO: Can promote a structured work environment and better focus for some employees.
6. Work-Life Balance:
- WFH: Offers the potential for a better work-life balance, as employees can manage their schedules more flexibly.
- WFO: May require a more rigid separation between work and personal life.
Challenges of WFH and WFO
- Technology and Security: — WFH: Requires strong cybersecurity measures and reliable internet connections. — WFO: Typically has established IT infrastructure and security protocols.
- Company Culture: — WFH: Can challenge the preservation of company culture and team bonding. — WFO: Promotes a more traditional company culture with in-person interactions.
- Environmental Impact: — WFH: Reduces the environmental impact associated with commuting and office energy consumption. — WFO: May have a higher carbon footprint due to commuting and office energy usage.
- Performance Evaluation: — WFH: Evaluation can be based on deliverables and results, as physical presence is not a factor. — WFO: Physical presence and office dynamics may influence performance evaluations.
Today’s work culture is changing rapidly and we as humans are also adapting to it. Today’s WFH culture is very bad for the youth who are the power of the country. When today’s young people visit to different places or work from the office, they meet different people, they get some inspiration, they meet great mentors, and mentors are people who are emotionally invested in your success. Working from the office gives you better ideas to clarify yourself in your life.
The work from home policy brought many changes in the business industry. Business modal like We Work came strongly in the market. Zomato or Swiggy or Zepto expand their operations rapidly because they find their need.
Final Verdict
I didn’t have a proper workstation when I was started to working from home in the pandamic and used to often sit wherever I could, on the dining table, sofa or bed in an inverted position most of the time (which seriously hurts the back). Having a workstation is very important. And it’s not just for your back but also mentally, you need to compartmentalize your work and your home. Basically, on days when we feel burnt out, we go home. We go and relax and not think about work. But when your workplace is your home, there is no escape place to go to. As we think it’s our mind doing all the actions, it’s our atmosphere too. Whenever I go to the office, I feel like working because everyone around me is. If I ever feel burnt out, then I would look forward to going back home and relaxing and there’s the environment compartmentalization.
No-work timings, That was a huge deal breaker for me. I just didn’t have work timings. God, was that killing?!! I can’t even imagine what a life I led and it was so cumbersome. I didn’t have a schedule. I just woke up and opened my laptop, I would check work messages while taking tea.
So, according to me, it is very important to work from office till you retire from your daily routine[this is impossible for you in today’s life]. Working from home is also very important to manage your personal life because professional life never ends because work never ends and we can’t ignore our personal life and family at any cost because the human is replaceable at work but not in home.
I would suggest going with the hybrid model and working from home 2–3 days a month so you can relax and work around your priorities and find a way to stabilize your professional and personal life.
